Charlottes LGBT history shows radical attitude shifts, despite fights over trans rights Charlotte's NPR News Source

Are you a medical or mental health professional interested in becoming a PATH provider? To address this, I took it upon myself to create city guides specifically tailored to meeting trans people. Yet,  finding an app that “works” is a lot about personal preference. Charlotte has a lot going on for trans individuals, but still, I couldn’t find a solid social media group for the community. The Scorpio Lounge and Oleen’s opened in 1968 and became two mainstays.

Charlotte info & events delivered to your inbox.

Petra’s Bar – Located at 1919 Commonwealth Ave, started off as a gay bar but slowly, it has also become a popular spot among cis folks. The owners don’t care whether you’re trans, gay straight, bi, or anything else. Hattie’s Tap & Tavern – Located at The Plaza, known as a lesbian bar, but it’s a welcoming spot for all queer folks, especially trans women.

Support our Mission

“Some gays fear the simplest act, like holding hands in the park, will expose their secret life,” the story noted. Charlotte Police Chief Jesse James (no relation to the outlaw) told the newspaper that he believed homosexuality wasn’t a law enforcement problem. The Charlotte Pride Festival wrapped up on Sunday with a parade, floats, dancing and thousands of cheering people filling uptown in every variation of rainbow garb. But this year’s Pride took place against the backdrop of statewide and national fights over LGBT rights that hold center stage in our ongoing culture wars.

Community Centers and Organizations

“I decided to tear the mask off," Hiatt said. “I’m 45-years-old and I identify as a woman of transgender experience." I only wish that a place like this existed when I was a kid or a teenager. As a result of not having such a lovely place as this I held on to my shame and dysphoria, even self-loathing at times, and anger at God for putting me in the wrong body.

PATH Providers

Charlotte Trans Health is a collective of multidisciplinary healthcare providers committed to gender affirming care through education, community outreach, consultation, and provision of services to the community. Through collaboration, peer education, and consultation, our members strive to increase access to care through enhanced trans-specialized clinical competency of individual healthcare providers and larger systems of care. Education on gender affirming care ranges from limited to non-existent in most clinical programs, thus our providers fill this gap to increase resources and reduce disparities in the Charlotte area. Providers on this list have previously confirmed that they provide trans-affirming care.

However, Charlotte Trans Health does not make any guarantees or promises as to your ability to access care, of the quality of care you will receive, the availability of LGBTQ+ resources to you, or that these providers accept any insurance plan. Before selecting a provider, you should ensure that the provider is a licensed healthcare professional and that the provider will accept your medical insurance (if any). The PATH program offers financial assistance to transgender and gender-diverse members of the Charlotte metro area for general and gender-affirming healthcare. The current program offers free case management, mental health services, medical care, and limited prescription coverage.

Provider Education

Charlotte Trans Health cannot guarantee the availability of a provider listed on this site. Charlotte Trans Health cannot contact providers on behalf of a patient; specific questions about health-related issues and care should be deferred to a specific healthcare provider. In the first 7 months of educational programming, PATH has provided 9 trainings to 103 medical and mental health providers and administrative / support staff in healthcare settings. Finally, our providers and our website provide a valuable resource to increase access to competent, LGBTQIA+ affirming healthcare in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties. As of October 2017, the Campaign for Southern Equality has just published its Trans resource list for the South. In this new version of Trans in the South, you’ll find lists of trans-friendly service providers – from doctors to attorneys to counselors – across the South as well as resources to assist with funding medical transition. Over the past year we’ve worked hard to add more resources to each state in the guide.

CATS Hosts Public Meeting for Website

The North Carolina General Assembly last week overrode Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of a trio of bills. One bans puberty blockers, gender surgery and other transition-related health care for minors. One forbids transgender women and girls from playing on female sports teams from middle school through college. And one requires schools to notify parents if their child wants to start using a different name or pronoun.

The Scorpio –Located at Freedom Dr, this place in Charlotte has been around since 1968, and it’s the only real gay “club” in town. But to keep your options open I’ve created a list of venues from all corners of Charlotte. Another reason Hiatt put off living her authentic self is that she became a parent and adopted two children.

She wanted to focus on them but now that they are older and out of the house, she said it's time for her to focus on herself. Hiatt believes that sharing her story could allow someone to be their authentic self. She said not being who you are is a horrible experience and she's looking forward to her future.

I am only thankful and I mean so thankful that this place exists and that the world gives us in the LGBT community a chance to demonstrate that we are equals and have something to offer this world that is Paramount to the success of humanity. No one should face barriers to getting the healthcare they need. We are also proud to report that provider participation has grown from our initial group of 13 providers to have included meeting participation to an average of 100 providers annually.

Sidelines Sports Bar – Also located at South Blvd this is another place owned by Kevin. Argon – Located at South Blvd, visited this place on a Friday night and had a great time.

The moves Transcend is making will continue to elevate the trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming community towards the future! Amazing staff with people who have genuine passion for the cause. And if you’re too busy to meet in person then you can start slow by finding trans people online. In a nutshell, Charlotte is a treasure trove for meeting trans individuals.
